Projects

The European Tyre Recycling Association (ETRA) is involved in a number of projects regarding developing alternative uses for End of Life Tyres (ELT). These are projects funded by the EU in partnership with ETRA and are aimed at developing high value recycling processes and products from ELT.

It is critical that the recycling sector moves towards a more sustainable route to process tyres. Tyre Derived Fuel is a quick solution to a large problem, but it is far from being the most environmentally efficient use of resources. Once a tyre is burned in a cement kiln or for fuel, it is gone forever. Tyres reprocessed to create higher value outputs and reconstituted materials give a second, third or even fourth life to the raw material, and ultimately, in its final use it can still be consumed as fuel.

The aim of ETRA is to put as much time and distance between the ELT and its ultimate disposal in power plants and cement kilns.
